[ARCHIVED] Get Your Marriage License Before August 31st: Database Upgrade to Delay Marriage License Processing

marriage-license-update

Due to a Kansas Department of Vital Statistics database upgrade, marriage licenses will NOT be issued statewide between September 7 and 14.

Parties are normally advised to allow two weeks from the time the application is filed for the license to be delivered. However, since the court uses this database to process licenses, couples can expect some delays.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, if a couple applies for a marriage license by August 31, the couple will have a license in hand by September 7.

Applications submitted after August 31 will be processed after September 14, when the database comes back online. There is a three-day waiting period required by statute, after which the court begins processing the application. So, if an application is submitted after August 31st, the earliest a couple will be able to be married is September 17th due to the three-day waiting period.

Couples can still apply for a marriage license during this down time, but the applications cannot be processed while the Office of Vital Statistics database is offline.

Certified copies of licenses will not be available through the Office of Vital Statistics until after the upgrades have been completed.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
